Born Phillip Alford in 1948 in Gadsden, Alabama, he Attended Ramsay High School in Birmingham. After his film career was over, Philip was inducted in 1989 into the Alabama Walk of Fame for his role of Jem in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), where is worked with Gregory Peck. One of AFI's top ten films of all time, we learned later that Phillip and Mary Badham (who played Scout) were very antagonistic towards each other on the set, making some of their scenes together difficult to film. Curious note: Philip's sister, Eugenia, became the stand-in actress for Mary Badham.

Phillip appeared on the local stage in three Town and Gown productions at the Clark Theatre in Alabama, before going to New York to audition for "To Kill a Mockingbird". After Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color Bristle Face (1964), Phillip was cast along side Jimmy Stewart in Shenandoah (1965) where his character's name was simply "boy."

After Fair Play (1972), Phillip quite the business and because a successful businessman and consultant in Birmingham, Alabama.
