Description

A sweet coming-of-age story heavily influenced by Ingmar Bergman in its lyrical view of the Swedish countryside and its sense of the harsh inner lives of children.

Oswald (Nick Borjlind) is an 11-year-old who looks like a somber version of Macaulay Culkin. In 1959, he and his parents spend the summer with relatives in the country. His father, Tjaffo, is tall and heavyset but his greatness is all in Oswald's mind.

You see Tjaffo is a hapless drinker and womanizer, the kind who glides through life on charm. Oswald's mother is patient, understanding and totally without illusions about her husband. The most intriguing aspect of the film is Oswald's understandable hero worship of his father, an identification so thorough that the boy sometimes treats his mother with cruel neglect, in this nicely done, intelligent drama about family.
