Image Gallery Description 3Meet Pixote (pronounced "Pea-shot"), a baby-faced boy of about ten who has had a run-in with the law, which is an easy thing to do if you are a runaway kid struggling to survive in Brazil. While spending some time in reform school, our young hero makes a few older friends who teach him the ropes. Out on the streets, Pixote and his pals quickly enter the criminal underworld, make their living by snatching purses, selling narcotics, pimping whores. Are they clever enough to stay alive in the often brutal environment? In my opinion, this is the absolute best of the "street-kid" genre, is a harsh, realistic look at children who are given no choice in life and who in turn do what they must. Fernando Ramos Da Silva stars as Pixote, was a non-professional actor from a poor Brazilian family. He here gave such an incredible performance the boy quickly found himself a celebrity, but illiterate, he could not read well enough to memorize scripts, failed to make it as an actor. So, Fernando got involved in crime, was killed at the age of nineteen by a group of police; his death remains somewhat of a mystery even until today and is the subject of the 1996 film Who Killed Pixote?. Pixote was directed by Hector Babenco and is based on Jose Louzeiro's book A Infancia dos Mortos. Winner of many awards, this is an undisputed masterpiece. Highly recommended! There is a small tracking problem about half way through the VHS tape, and there are also a few small glitches in the VHS - DVD is excellent! Cast & Crew |
